Public
Safety:
To
keep the citizens of Washtenaw
County safe, our police force,
correctional facilities and prevention
programs must be efficient, well-funded
and supported by the Board of
Commissioners. One of the best
ways to impact jail overcrowding
is to prevent criminal behavior,
and I support reaching area students
through the Washtenaw Teaching,
Educating and Mentoring (T.E.A.M.)
program in schools.
Children/Families:
The
county board can help children
and families best by ensuring
local employment opportunities,
affordable housing, school readiness,
and access to medical care. My
background in education will be
useful in working with the Washtenaw
County Success by 6, Head Start
and Literacy Programs.
Housing:
With
the foreclosure epidemic facing
not only our county but our country,
I would be honored to be a part
of a governmental body that is
facing this problem head on and
saving people from losing their
homes. I commend Washtenaw County
Treasurer McClary for her award
winning Property Tax Foreclosure
Prevention Program supported by
the Washtenaw County Board. For
every family that loses their
home, the ripple effect is tremendous
on all citizens.
Environment:
With
the current price of gas and food
rising along with the effects
of global warming, the time is
now to put in place better mass
transit, more local food programs
and more thorough recycling/reuse
programs. The city of Portland’s
Office of Sustainable Development
is a leading national example
of how government can work with
citizens to make an impact on
the environment and a group that
I would reach out to for ideas
to improve Washtenaw County’s
already strong commitment to the
environment.
